About us - meet the family behind Myrrdah

We are first nations sisters living in Mount Isa on our traditional homelands, we are descendants of the Mighty Kalkadoon tribe of North West Queensland, we also have ties to the NT where our great-great grandmother Myrrdah was born. Growing up in a nomadic family we moved around North Queensland a lot, spending a few years in the Northern Territory also. Although it was never for long away from our homelands we always found our way back home to Mount Isa to re-set and reconnect. As our tribe grew adding husbands and children, we had to learn to stay still so we are all living and painting on our traditional homelands today

Coming from such a big family mum would sew us clothes, blankets and anything else she could to help save our family a few dollars. We came from a large aboriginal family, Mum Dad and us 9 kids and always a few extra cousins, but mum and dad made sacrifices for our family so that we could all pile into our old troop carrier to go on our bush camping trips every school holidays with the bare basics, there was no such thing as a tent or lights and that was the way we liked it.

From as long as we can remember our father has always been carving artefacts, teaching us about bush foods and painting art he also went on to lead the fight to win native title rights for the Kalkadoon people so we have always had a cultural influence from dad but then also a very creative influence from our mother, all these experiences and memories have played their part in helping, inspiring and motivating us to bring this label to life.
